Estrogen-only HRT trial ended early; drug does not reduce heart attack risks
A U.S. government research agency announced Tuesday it is shutting down the second arm of a long-term study designed to determine whether hormone replacement therapy protects post-menopausal women against heart disease.
The decision may add to the confusion over HRT that has reigned since the first arm of the study, which followed women taking combined estrogen-progestin pills, was stopped in June 2002 because it was shown the drugs were doing more harm than good.
